The K53 Journey: Step by Step

Step 1 — Study for your learners test. Allow 2–4 weeks. Use the official K53 manual and our study guides above.

Step 2 — Book and pass the learners test. Visit your nearest testing centre with your ID, photographs, eye test certificate, and proof of address.

Step 3 — Get a learners licence. Valid for 24 months. You must drive with a licensed driver beside you and display L-plates.

Step 4 — Take professional driving lessons. A qualified driving school will teach you K53 defensive driving techniques, yard test manoeuvres, and road test preparation. For the full process, see our guide on how to get your learners licence.

Step 5 — Book and pass the practical test. The yard test and road test are conducted on the same day. Pass both to receive your driver’s licence.

Step 6 — Collect your driver’s licence. A temporary licence is issued on test day. Your permanent card licence takes 4–12 weeks.
