When to Renew

Your South African driver’s licence card is valid for 5 years from the date of issue. You can apply to renew up to one year before it expires, and you should. The new card takes weeks to arrive, so leaving it to the last minute means driving with an expired licence. That’s a traffic offence.

Your expiry date is printed on the front of your licence card. If you can’t find your card, the expiry date is also stored on the eNaTIS system — any DLTC can look it up with your ID number.

Driving with an expired licence is a traffic offence, and your insurance may not pay out if you’re involved in an accident.

If your licence is already expired, you can still renew it — there’s no penalty fee for being late. However, if your licence has been expired for more than 5 years, some DLTCs may require you to retake the driving test.

Documents You Need

  • South African ID — original smart card or green barcoded ID book
  • Current driver’s licence card — even if expired (or an affidavit if lost)
  • Eye test certificate — from a registered optometrist, not older than 6 months
  • Two passport-size photos — colour, taken within the last 6 months
  • Proof of address — utility bill, bank statement, or affidavit (not older than 3 months)
  • Renewal fee — approximately R250 (varies slightly by province)

Step-by-Step Renewal Process

  1. Get your eye test done first. Visit any registered optometrist. The test takes about 10 minutes and costs R50–R150. You need the official certificate — a prescription slip is not enough. The certificate is valid for 6 months.
  2. Visit your nearest DLTC. You don’t have to go to the same centre where you originally got your licence. Any DLTC in South Africa can process your renewal. Some centres allow bookings, but most operate on a walk-in basis for renewals.
  3. Complete the DL1 application form. You can fill this in at the centre. It asks for your personal details, licence code, and contact information. The clerk will check your documents and take your fingerprints and a new photo.
  4. Pay the renewal fee. Most DLTCs accept cash. Some accept card payments. You’ll receive a receipt — keep this safely. It serves as your proof of application while you wait for the new card.
  5. Wait for your new card. The typical waiting time is 4–12 weeks, depending on your province and how busy the card production facility is. Your temporary driving licence (the receipt with a photo) is valid during this period.
  6. Collect your new card. You’ll receive an SMS when your new card is ready. Return to the same DLTC with your ID to collect it. Bring the old card as well — they may request it.

Renewal by Province — What to Expect

The process is the same nationwide, but waiting times and how you book differ by province.

Province Booking Method Typical Wait for Card
Gauteng Online booking available at some centres 6–12 weeks
Western Cape Online booking at most centres 4–8 weeks
KwaZulu-Natal Walk-in at most centres 6–10 weeks
Eastern Cape Walk-in 6–12 weeks
Free State Walk-in 4–8 weeks
Other provinces Walk-in 4–10 weeks

Good to know: December and January are the busiest months at DLTCs. If your licence expires in those months, start the renewal process in October or November to beat the rush.

Lost Your Licence Card?

If your licence card is lost or stolen, you need to get an affidavit from the police station before going to the DLTC. The affidavit confirms the loss and replaces the physical card as part of your renewal documents. The rest of the process is the same.

If your card is damaged but still readable, bring it along — most centres will accept it without requiring an affidavit.

Can I Drive While Waiting for My New Card?

Yes. The receipt you receive when you apply for renewal serves as a temporary driving licence. It’s valid for the period stated on it (usually up to 6 months). Keep it with you along with your ID whenever you drive.

Check with your insurance provider. Most insurers accept the temporary licence as valid proof, but some have specific requirements. It’s worth confirming to avoid any claims disputes.

Pensioner Renewals

Pensioners (over 65) follow the same process but may qualify for reduced fees at some DLTCs. The eye test is especially important — some optometrists offer discounted rates for seniors.

If you have any medical conditions affecting your ability to drive, the DLTC may request a medical certificate from your doctor.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to renew a driver’s licence in 2026?

The standard renewal fee is approximately R250. Add the eye test cost (R50–R150) and passport photos (R30–R60). Total budget: around R340–R460.

Can I renew my licence online?

The application itself cannot be done fully online — you must visit a DLTC for fingerprints and a photo. However, some centres allow online appointment booking so you can skip the walk-in queue.

My licence expired 2 years ago — can I still renew it?

Yes. There’s no late penalty, and the renewal process is the same. However, driving with an expired licence is illegal. If it’s been expired for more than 5 years, some DLTCs may require you to retake the driving test.

Do I need to take a driving test again to renew?

No — a standard renewal does not require any driving or written test. You only need an eye test. The exception is if your licence has been expired for a very long time (typically 5+ years).

Can I renew at a different DLTC from where I got my licence?

Yes. You can renew at any DLTC in South Africa, regardless of where the original licence was issued. Choose whichever centre is most convenient for you.
