Who Needs an International Driving Permit?

If you’re planning to drive overseas, you’ll probably need an International Driving Permit (IDP). It’s basically a translation booklet for your South African driver’s licence — works in over 150 countries that signed the Geneva or Vienna conventions on road traffic.

But here’s the key thing: an IDP is not a standalone licence. You always carry both your SA licence and the IDP together when driving abroad. The IDP just translates your details into multiple languages so foreign authorities and rental companies can understand your credentials.

Good to know: An IDP doesn’t replace your SA licence — it supplements it. You must have a valid, unexpired SA driver’s licence to use an IDP at all.

Which Countries Require an IDP?

Not every country insists on one. Some accept your SA licence solo (especially English-speaking countries), while others legally require an IDP.

Generally need an IDP: Most European countries, Japan, Brazil, parts of Southeast Asia.

Usually don’t need one: UK, Namibia, Botswana, USA (though rental companies often ask for one).

Requirements change. Check the specific country’s regulations or contact their embassy in South Africa before you go. When in doubt, get an IDP — it costs almost nothing and saves major hassle at the rental counter.

Where to Get an IDP in South Africa

Two main options:

The Automobile Association (AA)

Fastest and most popular choice. The AA has branches across South Africa and can often process same-day if you visit in person. You can also apply online and get it couriered to you (allow 5–7 working days).

Your Local Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC)

Some DLTCs issue IDPs, but it varies by province. Processing takes up to 5 working days, and not all centres offer this. Phone ahead to confirm before visiting.

What Documents Do You Need?

  • Valid South African driver’s licence (card format — not the old green book)
  • South African ID document or passport
  • One passport-sized photograph (colour, recent)
  • Payment: approximately R50–R90
  • If applying at the AA: completed application form (available at branch or online)
Got the old-style green ID book licence? You’ll need to convert it to card format first. This takes 4–12 weeks at your local DLTC, so plan well ahead if you’re travelling soon.

Step-by-Step: Applying Through the AA

  1. Gather your documents
Make sure your driver’s licence is valid and won’t expire within the next 6 months. Bring your ID, one passport photo, and payment.
  2. Visit your nearest AA branch or apply online
In-person applications are processed immediately in most cases. Online applications require uploading scanned copies and paying via the AA website.
  3. Complete the application form
Fill in personal details, licence number, countries you’re visiting, and travel dates. Be accurate — any errors slow things down.
  4. Pay and receive your IDP
The AA issues a small grey booklet with your licence details translated into several languages. In-person applicants usually get it immediately. Online applicants receive it by courier within 5–7 working days.

How Long Is an IDP Valid?

12 months from date of issue, or until your SA driver’s licence expires — whichever comes first

If you travel frequently, you’ll need to renew it every year. There’s no limit on how many times you can renew.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

Leaving it too late

If you’re applying online or through a DLTC, allow at least 2–3 weeks before your trip. Courier delays and processing backlogs can catch you out, especially around peak travel seasons (December, Easter).

Forgetting to carry your SA licence

The IDP is only valid when presented together with your South African driver’s licence. Leave your SA licence at the hotel and the IDP alone won’t be accepted.

Assuming the IDP covers all vehicle types

Your IDP reflects the categories on your SA licence. Got only a Code 8 (light motor vehicle)? The IDP won’t let you ride a motorcycle abroad. You need the corresponding licence category in South Africa first.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use my South African licence in Europe without an IDP?

It depends on the country. Some European countries accept an SA licence for short visits (usually up to 90 days), while others require an IDP by law. France, Italy, Spain, and Germany generally require an IDP. Check the specific country’s requirements before you travel.

Do I need an IDP for Namibia, Botswana, or Mozambique?

Namibia and Botswana generally accept a valid SA driver’s licence without an IDP, especially for SADC nationals. Mozambique officially requires an IDP, though enforcement varies. For Mozambique, it’s safest to carry one.

Can I rent a car overseas with just an IDP?

No. You always need your original South African driver’s licence too. The IDP is a supplement, not a replacement. Most rental companies require both documents plus a valid passport and credit card.

What if my SA licence expires while I’m overseas?

Your IDP becomes invalid the moment your SA licence expires. You won’t be able to legally drive, even if the IDP itself hasn’t expired yet. Renew your SA licence before you leave if it expires within the next 12 months.

Is an IDP the same as converting my licence to a foreign country’s licence?

No. An IDP is a temporary translation document for visitors. If you’re relocating permanently, most countries require you to convert your licence to a local one within a certain period (often 6–12 months). The conversion process varies by country.
